The other day, I had a conversation where the person I was talking with didn’t insist that babies were beheaded on October 7th for the very first time.
Since I have news sources that have a track record of telling the truth, I knew that and other stories were false within about a week of them being reported. I continue to pay attention to these sources.
When we find out that we’ve been lied to, by media or by people, it’s in our best interests to stop giving them our attention.
Liars have agendas. They’re manipulative, and want to give a certain impression that deviates from facts on the ground.
With so many and so much vying for our attention, even if we find them charming or entertaining, liars don’t deserve our time.
Trust, I believe, is the new gold. It’s hard earned, and it can vanish like smoke on the breeze.
And this is as it should be.
On a personal level, people who fudge the truth can cause a lot of damage. And they’re looking out for number one, even when what they say causes harm to others.
On a political level, they are trying to manufacture our consent, very often for things that we should never consent to.
Today’s most obvious ploy is framing opposition to genocide as anti-semitism.
When so many Jewish people are leading the demonstrations and actions against Israel’s ongoing genocide of Gaza, this would be laughable if it wasn’t so absolutely tragic.
Please, find reliable news sources.
Our common future depends on well-informed people doing the right thing.
The timing of your post is ironic. It comes even as we see another great American myth unravelling in a New York courthouse. Evidence suggests that the person who popularized the term, "fake news" was the driving force behind the production and dissemination of "fake news"!
Sadly, most people in the USA depend on unreliable sources of information...
I had studiously ignored media coverage of Israel's offensive during that first week, so I was unaware of the beheaded babies story until much later. I was not part of that initial propagandistic dragnet, in other words.
For me, it was that one story that clued me into just how deceptive President Biden was willing to be in order to advance this goal of the destruction of Gaza. Even after he'd heavily intimated that he had personally seen photos of these supposedly beheaded babies, which the White House had to walk back and claim that Biden misspoke, three to four weeks later at a press conference he brought the rumor up again. That's when I knew: he's doing this on purpose. He KNOWS what he's doing.
